Rented and watched Donnie Darko for the first time last night.
On the one hand; wow! It was absolutely incredible from start to finish, it really was. Loved it.
On the other hand; what???
...I think I need to watch it again.

It's the sort of film you never understand even if you watch it over and over and study it and record it and make useful diagrams annd timelines and write books and documentaries and watch every scene individually and pause after every scene and watch it from the beginning again and make helpful worksheets and phone all your friends (Not that you'll have any if you do this) and talk to them about it and argue with the directors and record yourself talking as you are watching the film and watch all the special features even the really really really boring ones.
With the small exception of Beth or generally seems to know what's going on.

Ohh! I lurve Donnie Darko! You SO need to watch it more than once (it won't necessarily make more sense but it warrants repeated viewing - not just 'cos JakeG is sooo adorable).
We went to see it at the flicks twice within a week! Were you watching the original cut or the director's cut version? I haven't seen the directors version - although I would like to see that one, I did read a lot about it when it was first released. I would say from what I know that the original cinema release may be the better version (its a bit less heavy handed with the religious symbolism I think). And please, please tell me you were crying at the end. I mean, even the hardest of hearts has to break at the sight of the delectable MaggieG's make-up streaming tears and the wave between the mom and Gretchen....
Anyway, I adored it and it certainly was the film that made me fall just that little bit in love with JakeG.

I wanna see it.
Also must see Garden State, Edward Scissorhands and possibly Secret Window if I work up the courage.

The thing about Donnie Darko is it doesn't make sense. Even once you've heard the director's explanation for what's going on, it still doesn't make sense. The director's cut makes it even clearer that it doesn't make sense, as well.
Slight clue though: Donnie Darko is a superhero and only people from the future know that.
So given it doesn't make sense, you just have to go with the flow and enjoy the journey, which ultimately is the rewarding point.
